Ergonomics
What is ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the science that focuses on human beings and their interaction with products,
equipment, furniture, facilities, and environments used in everyday living. Ergonomics seeks to
change the things people use and the environments in which they use these things to better match
the capabilities, limitations, and needs of people. The goal is to enhance productivity, comfort, safety,
ans satisfaction. In a phrase, ergonomics is "designing for human use."
How should a keyboard be positioned?

The ergonomic objective in positioning the keyboard is to allow the user to type with straight wrists.
The wrists should not be bent up or down, or in or out while typing. When sitting in a near upright
posture, the home row of the keyboard ("asdfghjkl" keys) should be at elbow height and the keyboard
should be kept flat.

If the height of the keyboard support is not adjustable, position the seat height so that the feet are flat
on the floor. Move the keyboard into position so that the home row of keys is at about elbow height If
the height of the keyboard support is fixed and cannot be adjusted, position the seat height so that the
home row of the keyboard is at about elbow height. If the feet can not be placed flat on the floor, use a
foot rest for support. Position the monitor below eye level and at a comfortable viewing distance. Place
a document holder next to the screen and, if necessary, position a task light to shine only on the
document.
